Flashback Fun! Merril Bainbridge

Not to go all Office Space on you, but I’m sure some of you are suffering from a case of the Mondays.

While there may not be an easy remedy, thinking back on simpler days of yore may brighten your mood just a bit. With that in mind, allow me to introduce a new segment I like to call… Flashback Fun!

First Up: Merril Bainbridge

Now, I don’t want to make generalizations here, but I’m going to toss this out there: If you were a teenaged girl in the ‘90s, you were obsessed with Merril Bainbridge’s hit song “Mouth.”

Maybe you bought the cassette single, or if you were really into it like I was, maybe you bought the entire album. And listened to it every day. Because it was just that awesome.

“Mouth” was the kind of song that could get stuck in your head for weeks at a time, and it was so fun, you didn’t even mind. In fact, you relished in it. If you were on your way home from school, listening to the radio, the minute you heard that opening vocal percussion kick in, you’d squeal with delight, pump up the volume, and sing along with every word. If you download it now, you’ll see that it still has the same effect.

But The Garden, Merril Bainbridge’s debut album, was about so much more than just that one song. Every track on this album -- from the so-fun-I-can’t-even-take-it “Miss You” to the beautiful “Julie” – is a sheer delight. Her cover of Pet Shop Boys’ “Being Boring” is stripped down and completely her own, and while singles “Under the Water” and “Sleeping Dogs” may not have had the same commercial success as “Mouth,” they were just as fantastic.

So if you’re like me and adored Merril Bainbridge’s deliciously infectious ‘90s jams, head on over to iTunes, Amazon or YouTube and reacquaint yourself with some of her music. You’ll be right back in the days of Empire Records and Jordan Catalano, and if you’re stuck at your desk with a case of the Mondays, that might just cheer you up.

And just think – now you don’t have any pesky chemistry homework that you had back then.
